Former MN Rep. Mary Murphy Moving To Hospice Care After Stroke

Former Minnesota Rep. Mary Murphy, the state’s longest-serving female lawmaker, will soon be placed in hospice care after suffering a stroke last week, according to Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman.

Hortman shared the news Monday evening on social media.

She said Murphy’s family felt hospice was the best path forward after the stroke left Murphy with a series of complications.

Murphy will be at the hospital until she can be transported to a hospice care facility, according to the post.

“While heart-wrenching, the family has determined that hospice is the best solution. Mary will receive comfort care at the hospital until she can be placed in a hospice care facility, which they expect to happen soon. The family is grateful for everyone’s love and support for Mary, but prefers not to be contacted at this time,” Hortman said.

Murphy, a devoted DFLer from Hermantown, lost her seat to Republican Natalie Zaleznikar by just 35 votes in 2022.

Besides being the longest-serving woman lawmaker in St. Paul, Murphy also holds the title as the second-longest Minnesota lawmaker of all time.
