Death of Longtime Local Lawmaker Mary Murphy

DULUTH, Minn. – After suffering complications from a stroke, Former State Representative Mary Murphy, died while in Hospice on Christmas.

The local lawmaker began her career in 1977, and held the same seat until 2022, when she lost to current Representative Natalie Zeleznikar, by only 33 votes. During her 45 years in office, Murphy served on various committees, focusing on education, transportation and infrastructure. She is also the longest serving woman in the Minnesota House’s history.

Alex Evans spoke with a member of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce, to learn about the positive legacy Murphy leaves behind.
