Friday Evening Northland Forecast: 12/27/2024

A Foggy Friday Night

Well, this is ridiculous. We finally got to the Winter Solstice last Saturday, and today we have thick fog and rain. That is not making the kids happy who want to take their new sleds down the hill! A persistent flow of warm air from the south has turned what little snow we do have to mush, and even that is melting away, with today’s high temps in the mid and upper 30s. The Northland depends on, and thrives on snow and cold in the wintertime. Spirit Mountain needs cold and snowy conditions, and so do all the businesses that sell things like snowblowers, snowmobiles, shovels, and even winter coats, hats and mittens. So, what are we going to do about this? Well, the weather around here can change real fast. You just have to have a little bit of patience. But, it is frustrating, coming right on the heels of last years wimpy winter!

What we need is some cold high pressure from the arctic. And, just like that, it’s on the way….slowly. We have a Dense Fog Advisory in effect for areas near Lake Superior until 10am Saturday morning. Our temps will stay in the mid and upper 30s on Saturday, and we may see a little light rain/snow mix, along with more fog on Saturday morning. But, then things will start to change. Late on Saturday, we will see a wind shift, and cooler air will come in from the west at 10-20mph. I would not be surprised to see a little bit of sunshine late on Saturday afternoon. Sunday will bring us partly sunny skies, with a high about 36, which is still way above our average high of 22.

We do see winter make a return next week! Our high temps Monday thru Friday will be 34, 25, 22, 16 and 14. So, while there currently isn’t any snow in the forecast for next week, at least it will be cold enough for snow, and not more of this silly rain we’ve been having all day today. There’s still plenty of time for this to be a respectable winter. I still think we have plenty of cold temps and snowfall in our future. And, the days are slowly getting longer, so I like that part!

Have a great weekend!
