Friday Evening Northland Forecast: 1/3/2025

First Weekend of 2025

Welcome to the first weekend of 2025. It seems a lot colder than just a week ago. That’s because it is. Just last Friday evening, we were talking about temps close to 40 degrees, and a dense fog advisory. Wow! What a difference a week makes in the Northland! Today, we’ve had a high of 9, and low of 2, with windchills down to -20. The average high and low for today is 21 and 4. So, last week we were way above average, and today, we are way below average. So, you can see how we get our ‘average or normal’ temps, somewhere in-between those widely separated temps. That’s why I find the weather here so fascinating. It’s never dull, that’s for sure!

The high pressure right on top of us is cold, and heavy and dense. It is cold air descending, and it literally pushes other storm systems away, and dries up the atmosphere. There is literally no chance we will have any kind of precipitation (it would only be snow) this weekend. However, there is a storm system just to our west that (unfortunately) is going to drop a half foot of snow in places like Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Iowa and other points to our south. We will be missing out on all that snowy fun by a few hundred miles. Again, because of the the arctic high pressure over us. So, the next few days look very sunny, cold and windy for us. Our normal high for today is 21, and our highs for the next several days are: 4, 9, 13, 8 and 7. Our low temps will all be 0 degrees or less til we get to Thursday.

The good news (as far as I’m concerned) is that the extended forecasts are showing a decent chance for snow, late next Thursday into Friday. It’s a clipper system coming from the northwest, so it  won’t have a whole lot of moisture to work with. But, snow beggars can’t be choosers. It we can get several inches of snow late next week, I’ll be pleased. Plus, the jet stream is showing signs of changing, and bringing us more chances for snow in the next couple weeks, which is another good sign! After last year’s wimpy winter, I’m really hopeful that we can get somewhere near our yearly average of about 80″ of snow this winter. But to do that, we need to get going. My fingers are crossed (inside my choppers).

Have a great first weekend of 2025, and let’s all hope we’re making fresh snow angels, one week from today!
