Lake Superior College and College of Saint Scholastica Students Come Back for Spring Semester

DULUTH, Minn. — It was a chilly return to the books for many college students at both Lake Superior College (LSC) and College of Saint Scholastica (CSS).

Students at Lake Superior College  kicked off their semester with crafts and an ice cream sundae bar as part of their Winter Welcome Week. Throughout this first week, students can participate in carnival games, grocery bingo, and outdoor activities like snowshoeing. On Monday, a local artist stopped by to make caricatures of students on their first day back in class.

“LSC is a great place to go to school. It’s a friendly place. The class sizes are small, and the students here really get to know their teachers,” said Students Activities Coordinator Heather Grillo. “The whole point of it is to let students know the activities they can get involved in if they need help with financial aid, if they have questions about graduating. We also have donuts in the morning to help them find their classes. We call it donuts and directions. So we always try to make it a welcoming place for our students.”

Lake Superior College has 34 student clubs and organizations for students to take part in, with over 90 certificate, diploma and associate degree programs available.

Meanwhile at College of Saint Scholastica, students also returned back to class for the spring semester. College of Saint Scholastica typically sees around 4,000 students enroll for each academic year. But the lack of winter weather has made some students struggle between some outside fun and their academics.

“Yeah, I’m pretty excited,” said Eli Coon, a freshman at CSS. “You know, we really didn’t have any snow over the break. So we really didn’t have anything else to do. I mean, now that I have class, and now that we have snow; I’m pretty disappointed that now I have to go to class. But you know it’s alright.”

Both LSC and CSS students’ semester end in the middle of May. University of Minnesota-Duluth students return to classes this Wednesday and students at the University of Wisconsin-Superior are set to return on Jan. 22.
