Extreme Temps: Ruth House Warming Center Offers Place to Stay

SUPERIOR, Wis. –With a severe cold spell hitting the Twin Ports in the upcoming days, Superior’s only warming center is seeing an increase in visitors.

The Ruth House warming center is open every night that temps drop past 30 degrees.

With an Extreme Cold Warming being issued for the northland, the warming house is encouraging people who are homeless to seek shelter.

The center provides a warm place to sleep for around 25 people every night, with more expected to stay during cold stretches.

Staff at the Ruth House are also encouraging others to help those in need, especially during the heart of winter.

“This building here, whether we are here or not, is going to be heated at night. There are buildings out in the community, other churches, they heat their buildings all night. Open the door up, let these people in, let them stay warm, help them, encourage them, give them a ride to find a job. And it works, we do it every day here,” said Sr. Pastor Jack Swonger at Ruth House.

The Ruth House Warming Center is always accepting donations and are looking for more sleeping cots this winter, as each guest receives a cot, a blanket and a pillow for the night.
