UW-Superior Women’s Hockey Takes Big Strides with New Head Coach Bre Simon

The Yellowjackets are currently 9-6-2 on the season and have put together a five-game winning streak.

SUPERIOR, Wis.- After the retirement of longtime head coach Dan Laughlin last season, the UW-Superior women’s hockey team is halfway through their first season with their new head coach Bre Simon

The Yellowjackets are currently 9-6-2 on the season and have put together a five-game winning streak.

Their latest victory was against Concordia Minnesota, where the Jackets won 3-to-2.

On Friday, no easy test as they go on the road to face second ranked UW-River Falls.

For Simon and the Yellowjackets, the first half of the season had learning moments for the team.

But entering the second half of the season the mindset is to focus on themselves and take the season one game at a time.

“Again, up and down I have been doing different things. Beginning of the year we were really scouting our opponents, which I think kind of psyched them out a little bit. So, I kind of dialed it back a little bit, and we have been focusing more on ourselves and what we need to do to prepare game by game. Right now, we are scoring which is great we weren’t a very high scoring team in the past so that’s also helping us,” said Simon.

Part of the Yellowjackets ability to find the back of the net was Coach Simon’s ability to build confidence in her players.

“Bre has been really helpful with all of us, myself included. We meet with her bi-weekly and we go over things with her, we can ask her anything. I think the big thing though for a lot of us was confidence. Letting us be more creative on the ice in the offensive zone. I think that has helped us a lot. Overall, I have nothing but praise for her, she is doing great,” said Senior Forward Gaby Andreacchi.

The Yellowjackets and the Falcons face-off Friday night.

Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
