Carbo Found Guilty at Second Trial For 1986 Chisholm Murder
DULUTH, Minn. – After the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned his previous conviction, a jury re-convicts Michael Carbo of the rape and murder of Nancy Daugherty in her Chisholm home back in 1986.
The 1986 murder and sexual assault of 38-year-old Nancy Daugherty in her home rocked the largely quiet Iron Range community of Chisholm. The case remained cold for nearly four decades before advancements in DNA technology and the availability of public genealogy databases identified 56-year-old Michael Allan Carbo as a suspect.
In 2022, Carbo was indicted and then found guilty of first-degree murder and criminal sexual conduct; however, in 2024, the Minnesota Supreme Court overturned the decision and ordered a re-trial. Justices stated that Carbo’s attorneys should have been able to introduce evidence that could point to an alternative suspect.
Carbo’s second jury trial began on January 13, and on Friday, he was again convicted on both charges.
In a statement, the St. Louis County Attorney’s Office said, “Through trial, it was once again proven that Mr. Carbo, age 18 at the time, attacked the 38-year-old Nancy Daugherty around 3 a.m. at her Chisholm residence where she lived alone.”
County Attorney Kim Maki said, “Our thoughts go out to the family of Nancy Daugherty. This has been a long road to justice.”
Carbo faces two mandatory life sentences with the possibility of parole after 17 years.
