Dressing up for cold weather
DULUTH, Minn. – Even after some warm days, we are still in the grasps of winter, and some chilly temperatures are expected in the near future. Eve Graves shows Fox 21 Meteorologist James McAllister how to properly layer up to take on winter outdoor activities in the Northland.
Eve Graves enjoys outdoor activities in the winter here in the Northland, and with the issues such as Reynaud’s Disease, cold urticaria, and cold induced asthma, she knows well the dangers of cold weather if you aren’t prepared to take it on. With the knowledge she has developed over the years, she considers herself a cold weather dressing expert. Here are some of the things she has shown James to layer up properly for some cold weather activities.
- Bottom half:
- Begin with long underwear that will wick away any sweat or moisture. Make sure it is not cotton
- Follow up with a wind layer so wind can’t penetrate
- Top Half:
- For the base layer, wear a thin, wicking long-sleeve. Make sure it is not cotton.
- The mid-layer is typically made of fleece and is for colder days
- Next, wear a top layer that works as a wind breaker. Make sure it doesn’t have plastic on the inside, as it can trap moisture and frost up
- Feet:
- Wear good thick wool socks. Do not wear cotton socks.
- Use feet warmers if extra heat is needed
- Wear a good pair of boots that are waterproof as to not soak up moisture
- Head:
- A buff is good to keep you neck warm and can go over your head
- Thinner caps can be for warmer days to act as head cover
- Hands:
- Mittens are much more ideal than gloves, as they maintain heat much better with your fingers close together
- Use hand warmer, including one for your thumb
- Eyes:
- Ski glasses can protect your eyes from wind
- For colder days, ski goggles can help keep your eyes warm as well
- Other Items:
- Warm Skin cream acts as a barrier from the cold on exposed skin
- A Lung Plus warms your breath as you breathe in cold air
- Kinesio Tape protects exposed skin from the cold on especially frigid days
