Duluth Polar Plunge Expects to Make A Freezing Splash this Weekend

DULUTH, Minn. — This Saturday, hundreds of people are expected to jump into the freezing waters of Lake Superior, all for a good cause.

The 24th annual Duluth Polar Plunge is expected to make a splash at 2 p.m. at the end of Park Point. A costume pre-party is expected to take place at the Garden at 1 p.m.

This year around 650 people are signed up for the plunge. This includes Chief of Police Mike Cenyowa, Duluth Mayor Roger Reinert, and even some of us at FOX21.

“If it’s your first time, don’t stress too much about how cold the water is going to be. It’s actually just that anticipation that really kind of gets you worried,” said Jeremey Occonnor, the organizer and Duluth Police Officer. “But then once you jump in the water- I mean, every year I’ve done it now that I jumped in and I’ve been ready to jump back in again, because it hits you and it’s not as cold as you think.”

This year the Duluth Polar Plunge is just under their $100,000 goal. In the event’s 24 year history, the Duluth area has raised almost $3 million.

All proceeds raised this year will go to Special Olympics Minnesota.
