2nd Graders Participate in 18th Annual ‘Ikidarod” Race
DULUTH, Minn.– How cool would it be to step into the shoes of a musher for a day?
A group of students from North Shore Community School in Duluth got to do just that for the 18th annual “Ikidarod” race.
The ‘Ikidarod’ is a cultivated event from lessons the kids gathered in class.
Before the race began, 2nd graders studied up on both the Beargrease race and the Iditarod.
The dogsledding sport made its way into literature, geography and math lessons.
But now, it’s the ultimate test of everything they’ve learned.
Around 20 parents cheered on the kids as they navigated the trails.
“It’s super rewarding. I teach in the classroom, and I see what they’re doing. But to hear them out here using what they’re learning without me guiding or telling them what to do that’s where it’s really rewarding,” said Anne Lampela, the 2nd grade teacher.
The abundance of snowfall this year made the race extra successful.
