Superior Police Department Promotes Michelle Pope to Patrol Captain

SUPERIOR, Wis. — The Superior Police Officer just earned a new stripe being appointed to patrol captain.

Captain Michelle Pope has been onboard with the Superior Police Department for the last 23 years. Pope has been a life-long resident of Superior and even graduated from UWS.

Captain Pope joined the department back in 2002. Since then she worked in narcotics and work in the detective bureau for nine years. Her last 6 years on the department Pope worked as an investigations lieutenant.

But in her new role as captain, Pope said she’s excited to help her department and community to become stronger.

“This is where I wanted to work from the very beginning,” said Captain Pope. “I’ve had a really happy, successful career and it’s because of the people that you work with.”

As part of her new role, Captain Pope will oversee trainings that the department will undergo as well as making sure the Superior Police Department stays up-to-date with the latest policing trends.

One area that she hopes to improve is the department’s staffing.

“It’s been a challenge for several years,” said Captain Pope. “So working on innovative ways to reach out and recruit will be one of the bigger challenges and goals, and then just maintaining the staff we have and doing everything we can to help them grow in their careers and feel fulfilled.”

Pope is the first woman on Superior Police Department to be promoted to patrol captain. She officially started as patrol captain on Tuesday.
