Lake Superior Zoo Becomes a “ZANE” Partner
DULUTH, Minn.– The Lake Superior Zoo is now getting a lot more accessible, since they’re the first facility in the state to partner up with the “Zane” Program.
‘ZANE’, or Zoos and Aquariums for Neurodiverse Ecosystem Program is a nonprofit that equips zoos with resources to better understand those needs.
Earlier this week, it was announced the Lake Superior Zoo would be pairing up with ZANE, to better improve their already existing tools to accommodate neurodivergence.
The executive director told FOX 21; it’s an honor to be the first zoo in the state to join the program.
“This is just one of the many initiatives we participate in that really creates a zoo for all people. You know part of the progress that we’re making in towards of creating an inclusive and accessible space for all,” said Haley Hedstrom, Executive Director for the Lake Superior Zoo.
Some of the new changes includes signage for headphone friendly areas displayed around zoo grounds.
In addition, they have 10 backpacks for use in the gift shop filled with items such as headphones, fidgets, and other tools to make the zoo even more accessible.
“This is something we wanted to jump on right away. You know we are a place for all people, we have diversity as well as biodiversity with all the animals at the zoo. So it’s great to be able to offer something like this and be a member of this program as the first here in the state,” explained Hedstrom.
Another resource the zoo is excited to unveil is the option for a sensory room during events.
Which they’re hoping it’ll make its unofficial debut right on time for their “Egg-Straveganza” Day.
