Beargrease releases statement in regards to new starting point

MINN. — Another weather obstacle for the John Beargrease sled dog marathon, as “rapidly deteriorating snow” is forcing a change in this weekend’s starting location.

This announcement comes after a lack of snow and icy conditions postponed Beargrease from Jan. until this Saturday, March 2nd.

The race was set up to begin at Billy’s Bar in Duluth, but it will now move up to Two Harbors. Organizers say the move is to ensure a safe and competitive trail for mushers and their teams.

A statement released by Beargrease about the move reads: “Weather always plays a role in sled dog racing, and unfortunately, the recent warm temperatures have made conditions at our original start line unsuitable for the race, there is virtually no snow as of right now. While we’re disappointed to move from our traditional start, we’re grateful for the support of Two Harbors and our dedicated volunteers who make this race possible. Our team has worked hard to ensure the course remains safe and competitive, and we’re looking forward to an exciting race.”

The race starts in Two Harbors at 11:05 Sunday morning, with festivities beginning on Saturday at Fitger’s courtyard in Duluth. Those include mini sled-dog races and opening ceremonies at the Buffalo House in Duluth. For times and all the latest info on the race, check out their website.
