Superior Middle School holds its first Young Writers Conference
SUPERIOR, Wis. — Aspiring authors in Superior had a chance to learn more about writing from local authors today.
Superior Middle School held its first Young Writers Conference. Middle school students were given a chance to submit a piece of writing. Fifteen submissions from each grade were chosen to attend.
At the conference, students got to hear from a published high school Student, then got to go to a smaller session with other local authors.
“I think sometimes our students think like, well, you have to be a grown up to do things,” said Instructional Coach Amanda Lindquist. “She’s showing us that we don’t, we can do whatever we want at whatever age. You just have to follow through and persevere.”
One of the things the organizers hope students took way was a better understanding of the various ways to get published. They also hope students walked away with excitement about writing and the inspiration to do their own writing.
“I think that it could just be helpful to have kids see someone that’s similar to their age that’s written a book,” said author Madilynn Powers. “I know I didn’t see anyone that was my age, and I kind of felt like a little bit alone, or a little bit like, you know, my goals were going to be more difficult to accomplish.”
Previously UWS hosted a version of the conference for middle schoolers, but this is the first time this conference was organized and hosted by the middle school.
