1 Dead, 1 Rescued After UTV Falls Through Ice In Bay Along St. Louis River

SUPERIOR, Wis. — A top law enforcement official confirmed with FOX 21 Thursday evening that a body was located in the water along the St. Louis River after the UTV they were in fell through the ice.Kimballs Bay

The body was located within the vehicle 14 feet below the surface in Kimballs Bay near Billings Park, according to the official.

The call for help came in around 3 p.m.

Superior firefighters arrived on scene to rescue one of the riders from the water.   The other person on board was missing at the time.

Multiple agencies responded, including the dive team from Superior Fire and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and the St. Louis County Rescue Squad.

A nearby neighbor told FOX 21 the two people on the UTV “gave minnows to another guy fishing and then the guy fishing heard them screaming for help. Within minutes, the cops were here and they got [the one rider] out of the water in about 15 minutes,” according to the neighbor. “They used our kayaks.”

As of 8:30 p.m., crews recovered the body from the water and were working to recover gear and equipment.

The identities of the victim and other rider were not immediately released.

The Superior Fire Department is reminding people to be careful on any ice right now after days of mild air this week.
