Work begins on Bardon Peak Overlook area

DULUTH, Minn. — Crews have started to improve an area of West Skyline Parkway at Bardon Peak Overlook.

The project spans Skyline Parkway from the Magney-Snively Natural Area trailhead parking lot. It will focus on replacing over 30 culverts, doing some restoration work on the retaining wall, installing a historical marker at the overlook, and removing graffiti from the area.

“There’s a lot of failed culverts, and the project’s been needed to be done for a very long time,” said Duncan Schwensohn, senior engineer for the city of Duluth. “The retaining wall was installed in the late 1800’s, so that that’s also starting to show its age. We did get a federal grant, a $1.5 million scenic byways program grant, that’s helping to pay for the project.”

The Bardon Peak Overlook project is scheduled to be done by the end of October.

Traffic will remain closed there until the project’s complete.
