Cromwell-Wright’s Depth & Defense Gets Team to First State Tournament Since 2020

Cromwell-Wright earned the 5th seed and will match up with the 4th seed West Central Area.

CROMWELL, Minn.- For three straight years, the Cromwell-Wright girls basketball team was unable to take down Mountain Iron-Buhl in the Section 7A title game.

But, the fourth year was finally the charm as the Cardinals are back in the state tournament for the first time since 2020.

Cromwell-Wright earned the 5th seed and will match up with the 4th seed West Central Area. The Knights are also the 9th ranked team in the state.

Head Coach Jeff Gronner says the team’s depth mixed with their defense will make for an interesting contest come Thursday.

“After watching film, they’re big, they have a couple of six footers. They have some length that could give us issues. But overall, I like the matchup. I like how we can defend against them,” said Gronner.

While the Cardinals are confident with their defense, there’s also one other thing they’ll rely on according to senior guard Siiena Anderson.

“Something we also get told a lot about our team is how we share the ball so well. I feel like that’s been how we’ve been so successful. So we’re just focusing on keeping doing that for the upcoming game. I think we have great chemistry on our team and I think that’s from sharing the ball so much. We just want to see each other succeed. So if that means giving up a point ourselves to get a better point, we’ll do that,” added Anderson.

Anderson and the Cardinals tip off against the Knights at 1 PM on Thursday at the University of Minnesota.
