Spring Trails and Bike Safety Reminders

DULUTH, Minn.– With spring around the corner, soon enough it’ll be time to swap the skis for a pair of wheels.

With the weather turning warmer, it may be time to dust off the bike before taking it for a ride.

Before doing so, there are a couple things to keep in mind before heading out.

Checking in on little things like rotors, brakes and tire pressure is crucial for a safe bike.

‘Traverse Duluth’ not only fixes larger issues with bikes, but they also rent out mountain bikes and E-bikes all season long.

“If you have any questions or anything you want done on your bike stop by, we’re happy to help getting everything up to speed that needs to be. Lots of great bike shops in Duluth as well,” said Eric Holl, owner and manager of ‘Traverse Duluth’. “It’s going to make such a difference in the longevity of your bike. And just being able to get out and have a good time and not worry about the mechanics of it and just have fun in the sun.”

And before gearing up to hit the trails, the Executive Director of COGGS, or “Cyclists of Gitchee Gumee Shores” told FOX 21 if you hike or bike on closed trails, it could have lasting effects.

“If you have a tire track straight down the trail and then we get a lot of rain, it can cause a really big erosion event. Which that can cost upwards of $8- $9 a foot per trail to rebuild it. So, it can be pretty expensive pretty quick if we’re riding or walking when it’s too muddy out,” explained Ansel Schimpff, Executive Director for ‘COGGS’.

If you’re curious on the current trail conditions, COGGS is pretty efficent at updating the trails on their website.
