Taiga Farm & Seed Inspires Northern Gardens
DULUTH, Minn. — Taiga Farm & Seed is teaching people how to grow their own food in our area.
They specialize in Growing Zones 3 and 4, which includes the Northland.
From classes, to resources, to seed packs — they have everything a beginner needs to start their own northern friendly garden.
There are also resources for people who prefer to grow in pots.
When it comes to inspiring people to grow their own food they have three goals in mind:
“One is that there is a farmer gap in communities where farmers are aging out faster than new farmers are coming in.” Said Caroline Hegstrom, Chief Growing Officer at Taiga Farm and Seed, “Two is because there is not a lot of information for people growing in zones three and four. So northern growing zones is very difficult to find seeds and information to grow. We have 120 degrees swing between January and July, and that is really steep. And most, most places in the world don’t aren’t like that, and it’s very hard to find information that fits our zones. And then finally, to take away the fear of how to grow food.”
Gardening can feel complicated and even overwhelming, especially in our area.
Seeds can die for seemingly no reason sometimes.
It can be really discouraging but it can also be seen as an opportunity to learn.
“It happens to all of us. Even the best gardeners have a black thumb at times. And so again, it’s just part of the process. I mean, you can accept that that’s part of the process of growing, then it’s less scary. And you can then remove that fear and go, Okay, this is what I did well, and this is what I didn’t do. And then, and it’s just become a process then, of understanding the how what’s needed so you can do it better the next time.” said Hegstrom.
While they sell seeds and offer classes Taiga Farms has a ton of free resources available as well.
