Creating a Disability Friendly Community

SUPERIOR, Wis. — An important discussion on disability and inclusion was held at the Superior Public Library on Tuesday.

The discussion looked at how communities can create opportunities for those with disabilities to be more engaged in the community.

People with disabilities, friends and caregivers, business owners and city officials worked together to explore ideas and solutions.

The goal was really to work towards creating a more disability friendly community.

“I’m hoping that we will find connections and bring people in. Superior is an amazing community and a caring community, and I think a lot of people want to help and want to support, but don’t necessarily know where to begin,” said Shawna Anderson, a member of Douglas County Community on Transition. “Adults with disabilities just want something to do, they want to be important, they want to be included. And when a new opportunity comes along, it just is a bright spot in their day.”

Organizers hope to hold more of these sessions to keep the dialogue going.

The next planned dialogue event is late September.
