Friday Evening Northland Forecast: 3/28/2025
A Messy Weekend
Springtime in the Northland. We all know what a farce that is. I’ve seen (and shoveled) big snowfalls in March, April and even May. Some people say they’ve shoveled snow in June, but I haven’t experienced that….yet. Today it was 32 degrees in Duluth, and 82 degrees in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Even Rochester, MN hit 80 today. We had winter, spring and summer all in Minnesota today. That would have made for an interesting 1-day road trip around the state. You need to be ready for all 4 seasons. All at once.
Because of a stationary front across the Dakotas, and heading east into Minnesota and Wisconsin, and a warm front across southern MN, the squeeze is on for all kinds of weather in the region today. Snow and ice, and freezing rain to the north, and even a few thunderstorms rumbling from Cloquet to Superior, WI. There was even hail in Gary-New Duluth today. This truly is a tough place to forecast weather. Very humbling.
In addition to the Winter Weather Advisory for Friday night, there is also a Winter Storm Watch from Saturday night to Sunday night. And the National Weather Service has also issued an Ice Storm Warning for Lake and Cook counties, in Minnesota, and also for much of northern Wisconsin, and most of the U.P. of Michigan. Look for rain/freezing rain/drizzle to change over to snow Saturday night. Several inches are possible over most of the viewing area. Take it easy on the roads. It will be slick out there.
By Monday, things will clear out, and we will get a couple days of sunshine. By Wednesday, the next storm system will be here, and right now, it’s looking like we could get 6″ of snow. Really. Of course, that’s a few days away, and if the temperature swings a few degrees up or down, that could all be rain. But, I’m hopeful we can still make up our seasonal snow deficit. Yeah, I really do want to shovel snow in June….finally.
