‘Maurices’ Clothing Company Celebrates 94th Anniversary

DULUTH, Minn. — ‘Maurices’ the popular clothing company with strong roots in Duluth is celebrating it’s 94th anniversary today.

With nearly 100 years of business, the company is reflecting on both the hardships, and successes it’s brought.

Maurices began in Duluth back in 1931 during the Great Depression. The company has opened 850 locations in the United States and Canada.

Officals say Maurices selects “relatable home-town locations” when deciding where stores will go.

The newer downtown Duluth headquarters opened 10 years ago by the library. That’s where employees manage the whole process for sales, marketing, and sales-floor presentation.

“We’ve done well. I reflect back to the 2009 recession and we actually had comm store increases through that. And up until the last couple of years where businesses have fallen off again, we’ve kind of walked away from our customers to some degree and now we are back, and she’s coming back and it’s been fun,” said CEO George Goldfarb.

The CEO of Maurices says, he is proud of what the company has accomplished throughout the decades.

“We’ve had a lot of growth I mean if I go back to when I started, we had 300 stores and now we have 850 across the US and Canada,” said Goldfarb. “And you know we’ve done a great job at moving some of the business online through the years.”

Right now, Maurices is in the middle of a turn around. Since September, they’ve been focusing on opening more in person stores instead of online shopping.
