Young Man Dies from Injuries After Skiing Incident at Giants Ridge

3/31/25 Update:  Authorities have identified the victim as Christian Richard Hufnagle, 21, of International Falls.


BIWABIK, Minn. – A 21-year-old died after suffering injuries while skiing at Giants Ridge Resort, Gilbert Police say.

Gilbert Police Chief Ty Techar said his department responded to Giants Ridge Ski Resort on Saturday “for a report of an injured skier.” The 21-year-old male skier was extracted from the hill by the resort’s ski patrol staff, according to the Chief’s press release.

The victim was transported by Biwabik Ambulance Service to Essentia Health Northern Pines in Aurora. Hospital staff attempted life-saving measures, but “despite their efforts, the victim was declared deceased,” the press release said. The victim’s name is being withheld until authorities notify the family.

Gilbert Police say they are being assisted in their investigation by Giants Ridge Ski Patrol.

Police did not provide details about what led up to the injuries.
