Students Compete in Annual High School Math Meet
SUPERIOR, Wis. — For over 30 years, UW- Superior has opened up its space for math-letes competing both against each other, and for individual gain.
Over 70 students from 6 different high schools met up for the annual event. The meet covered geometry and calculus.
The goal is to take away the pressure of grades, and scores, and add some competitive edge to the subject.
Being able to offer the opportunity of a low stress and fun atmosphere for learning is essential for the organizers.
“It’s really nice to sort of have the energy that’s infused in athletic events, with that edge of competition,” said Josh Stangle, a associate professor in math-computer science at UW-Superior. “And bring it into a one day event here. You know, it’s not a long term thing where we’re worried about grades and all of that. It’s just being on campus, having some fun, and competing in good spirit against fellow students.”
Many of the students were handpicked or nominated to participate in the math meet.
One student competing has their eyes set on several things for this event.
“You know, you feel kind of proud because you’re representing your school, and yeah, you’d just feel proud I’d say,” said Caleb Rombach, a 10th grade student from Grantsburg High School. “It challenges yourself, and it’s easy to get down on yourself, but it’s fun to just keep on pursuing, pursuing your goal.”
Despite the event not being graded, the Math Meet awarded tee shirts and trophies to the highest scoring students.
