County Board Authorizes Development of New Public Works Facility on Iron Range
HIBBING, Minn. — The St. Louis County Board voted to authorize a bond sale for a new Public Works building on the Iron Range.
The new facility is planned to be built in Balkan Township and will serve Hibbing, Chisholm, and the surrounding communities.
The current public works building was built in 1940s and has been deemed inefficient for modern-size maintenance vehicles. The City of Hibbing is planning to purchase the current space from the county to create a public safety campus.
According to the county, the new public works building will ensure faster and more effective response for road maintenance and prolong the life of county equipment.
The bonds will be issued later this month with an estimated price of $45,000,000. Construction is expected to start this summer and finish by the summer of 2027.
