WLSSD Celebrates Steps Forward

DULUTH, Minn. — The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District (WLSSD) had a lot to celebrate Tuesday afternoon, announcing the launch their “Combined Heat and Power” (CHP) project, which they say will leverage technology to produce clean energy from renewable resources.

This new project will be facilitated by a new leader, as their executive director of 17 years passes the torch.

“It’s very gratifying to work for an organization where you can look at the lake and see directly what the impact of all everybody’s hard work is,” said Marianne Bohren, the outgoing executive director of WLSSD. “I work with absolutely fantastic people at every level.”

The incoming director, Carrie Clement, will begin her work in May. She explained the CHP project as hoping to turn the currently ‘gas generated from wastewater’ treatment into useable electricity.

“We are excited to start up our combined heat and power, CHP, project,” said Clement, “Which, uses all of that bio gas that’s produced to produce electricity, and also utilize the heat from the generators to heat buildings and the processes here.”

The project will hope to bring sustainable wastewater treatment rates, and to better drive the area towards energy independence.
