DTA unveils new busses and routes

DULUTH, Minn. — The DTA is getting ready to boost its fleet of busses, and bring back some in-demand routes.

The nine new busses include new features to meet the growing needs of riders.

The new DTA busses are equipped with fat tire compatible bike racks, as well as a new wheelchair securement system.

MN-DOT is responsible for the funding of the new busses. The DTA’s general manager tells us the accommodations have been in demand for quite a while.

They’re hoping the new features will not only bring new opportunities to riders, but also make up for setbacks the DTA experienced from the pandemic.

“As many are aware, we had to reduce service for a little while after we launched the ‘Better Bus Blueprint’ to a shortage of available drivers. Now that we’ve brought many more drivers here on board here at the DTA, we’re ready to increase that service again. So the biggest changes will be to our Green & Blue line, will be running every 15 minutes now.” said Chris Belden, Assistant General Manager at Duluth Transit Authority.

A DTA official says they’re experiencing an 11 percent increase with riders throughout the week, and 33 percent on the weekends.

With the significant increase, they’re ready to accommodate any rider for any reason.

“That’s great, the accessibility that people will have. Maybe if you live on the east side of town and you want to go to spirit mountain, it’s going to make it a lot easier if you just want to be on your bike and not have a vehicle there.” said Steve Meyer, General Manager at ‘Stewart’s Bikes & Sports’

The DTA is still currently searching for more weekend drivers to help with the new bus routes.

The new list of routes will take effect on June first.
