ST. PAUL, MN – As the floor session convenes on April 21, 2025 the House of Representatives will honor the life and legacy of Mary Murphy.

State Representative Mary Murphy was the longest-serving woman in the history of the Minnesota House.

“Mary Murphy Day” will feature the reading of a bipartisan House resolution; the reading of a gubernatorial proclamation; the presentation of a flag flown atop the State Capitol; and the speaking of fond remembrances by legislators past and present.

Legislators are expect to pass the Mary Murphy bill (House File 1090), which will create the “Mary C. Murphy Library Construction Grants Program.”

Following session, members and guests will gather for a reception with homemade blueberry muffins. In 1988, Mary Murphy authored the bill naming the blueberry muffin the state muffin.

The Hermantown resident worked as a Social Studies Teacher at Duluth Central High School from 1964 to 1997.

Murphy’s key issues were Labor and union advocacy, women’ s economic issues, education, consumer protection, health care, criminal justice, jobs and capitol projects.

She passed away on Christmas Day of 2024.  She was 85 years old.
