Mayor Reinert Proclaims Dark Sky Day in Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. — Starry Skies North Celebrated Dark Skies week at the Lake Superior Zoo.

Mayor Reinert made a proclamation designating today, April 24th, as Dark Sky Day in Duluth.

Seven local businesses were also awarded Dark Sky friendly certification.

Dark Skies is an international movement to reduce light pollution.

Many animals are affected by bright light pollution.

It also has a negative impact on humans as well.

Protecting dark skies also means being able to see stars and astronomic events like meteor showers.

“It’s vitally important because Duluth is the launching off point to two International Dark Sky places that are internationally recognized as being some of the last remaining dark places on Earth, but those places have no protection. It’s up to the residents of Minnesota cities like Duluth to all come together to do our part to keep light pollution from growing.” said Todd Burlet, President of Starry Skies North.

To get that certification the businesses needed to have no lighting that extends up beyond the horizon line, have no lighting that extends beyond the property, and use warm golden to deep amber lighting.

A few of the business recognized were Fitgers, Meteek Supply, and the Lake Superior Zoo.
