Rumors of a Federal Pardon for Derek Chauvin
MINNESOTA — The five-year anniversary of George Floyd’s murder is coming later this month on May 25th. And with that, there are concerns President Donald Trump might issue his convicted killer — Derek Chauvin — a pardon.
Trump has not given any public indication he would pardon the former Minneapolis police officer.
But rumors persist.
Chauvin is currently in federal prison serving a 20-year sentence for abusing his power as a police officer.
He’s serving that concurrently with his state murder conviction.
So, if Trump does pardon him, it won’t impact how many years he spends behind bars on state murder charges
“If Donald Trump exercises his constitutional right to do so, whether I agree, and I strongly disagree with him, if he issues that pardon, we will simply transfer Derek Chauvin to serve out his 22.5 years in state prison in Minnesota. And telling people that, just to remain focused on that,” said Gov. Tim Walz.
As of now, Chauvin is set to be released from federal prison in November of 2037.
His state prison sentence is projected to go until December of 2035.
