Duluth City Council to Discuss Renters Rights Proposal
DULUTH, Minn. — This week the Duluth City Council will be discussing a new proposal mandating landlords give renters more information about renters rights and resources when signing leases.
The proposal says landlords must provide tenants a summary of tenants rights protected by Minnesota Laws, plus contact information for the City of Duluth’s Life Safety Division and One Roof Community Housing.
This proposal is in response to two groups that want to pass a ballot measure for renters rights.
City Council Roz Randorf, who in part wrote the proposal, discussed it at the City Council Agenda Meeting last Thursday night.
“They are aware of all the work we are doing and hope that they will find it satisfactory to the ballot measure that they have been proposing that which we believe is systemically flawed, and so this work and several councilors are working on another piece,” said Randorf. “This is part one of hopefully a multipart process or some policy and ordinance changes that we will bring forward.”
Landlords that own apartment complexes of five or more units would have to post that information in a public place or face fines.
