S.S. Meteor Closed for Repairs
SUPERIOR, Wis. — The S.S. Meteor Museum in Superior is temporarily closed for repairs.
Over the winter, a crack appeared in the ship.
The museum has been working with the City of Superior and AMI Engineers to review the ship and repair the damage.
They hope to get it back open this summer, but there is no timeline yet.
The ship is land-berthed, meaning it sits entirely on land and there’s no risk of it sinking.
“Right now, the ship is closed for guests, staff, just really strong due diligence for safety. Following that engineering repair, we’ll get the guests back in and our staff back in there. But we’ve had a great collaboration with the city of superior to really ensure we’re protecting and preserving the SS Meteor.” said Katelyn Baumann, Board President of Superior Public Museums.
Volunteers at the Great Lakes Preservation Society do regular routine maintenance of the ship.
The S.S. Meteor is the last whaleback ship above ground in the world.
About 5 thousand people from around the world visit the ship each year.
