Advocate Shares Personal Story of Loss During Gun Violence Awareness Month
DULUTH, Minn. – June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, and one local woman is using her voice to highlight the impact gun violence has had on her family and community.
LaVenda Vann spoke Tuesday in front of the St. Louis County Board, urging local leaders and residents to recognize the devastating toll of gun violence and consider solutions.
“It was my brother, two nephews, and my grandson was the last one,” Vann said. “One less murder, one less suicide, one less accident, one less victim you know, because we lose so many in an instant to gun violence, whether it is in churches, concerts, grocery stores, neighborhoods, block parties. It’s just senseless killings.”
Vann, a gun violence awareness advocate, emphasized the importance of gun safety measures like the use of gun locks and secure storage. She also encouraged community members to reach out to those affected by violence and to support access to mental health and grief counseling.
“Talk to someone if you see they’re struggling—find out what’s going on. It might be a life that you can save,” she said.
In recognition of Gun Violence Awareness Month, Enger Tower was lit orange Tuesday night. Community members are encouraged to display orange lights throughout June to show their support for gun violence prevention and those affected by it.
