Superior High Dive Challenge Coming to Festival of Sail
DULUTH, Minn. — There’s a new event joining the Festival of Sail this year.
The Superior High Dive Challenge will see 10 internationally ranked high divers competing individually and in pairs from a 65-foot-tall platform.
There will also be exhibition and practice diving leading up to the events.
This is the first year of this competition, with hopes that it will continue on.
“I didn’t ever imagine, when we first started talking about this, that it would come this far. Of course, when you create an event from scratch, you don’t know how it’s going to go. So, I’m really, really glad that we have 10 internationally ranked divers from the US, Canada and New Zealand competed, and so it’s going to be a great event.” said Owen Waymouth, National Event Coordinator at USA Diving.
One of the divers competing is Minnesota Native Maya Kelly.
At 18 years old, she is the youngest competitor in the lineup.
But she’s excited to be able to show off her skills to her home state.
“Honestly just think this is a really cool event, especially being in my home state, I’m super excited for my friends and family to come out and just to spread exposure to this sport. High diving is a really small sport as it is, so just exposing it to different states, especially in the US, is really cool.” said Maya Kelly, Professional High Diver for the USA.
Festival of Sail tickets do include viewing the event, but a limited number of splash zone tickets will be available June 18th.
