Duluth City Councilor Mike Mayou to resign
DULUTH, Minn. – Duluth City Councilor Mike Mayou has announced he will step down from the Duluth City Council at the end of June 2025.
The resignation is pending the successful closing of his family’s home sale and purchase of a new home.
Mayou previously announced that he would not be running for re-election in November.
In his announcement Mayou said, “We’ve loved living in the Chester Park neighborhood for the past several years, but due to accessibility and mobility needs for my wife and growing family, we have needed to move to a more accessible home. We had been looking diligently for a house within the district but due to the tight housing market in Duluth, we were not able to find something within the district.”
Mayou has served as a City Councilor in District 2 since 2021. He said, “While we are happy to have found a home that suits the needs of our family, I am sad to have my time cut short on the Council, as there is still work yet to be done this year during a critical city budget cycle in the midst of federal chaos.”
With this vacancy Duluth City Charter says the City Council must appoint an eligible replacement.
Three people have officially filed to run for the seat that Mayou was vacating.
