Man, Woman From Minneapolis Charged In Duluth Fatal Shooting
DULUTH, Minn. – A man and woman from Minneapolis are charged in the fatal shooting of a Duluth man just blocks from the downtown area.
The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, June 15, at an apartment building at 117 East 3rd Street, which has been a block prone to violent crime over the past few years.
What We Know:
According to the criminal complaint, Antonio Duryea Hendon, 35, of Minneapolis arrived at the front porch of the building with a handgun and told everyone there to “go inside.”
A witnesses who ran away heard “four quick gunshots” followed by one “final pop” a couple of moments afterward, according to the complaint.
Hendon is then accused of shooting toward an upstairs neighbor who stuck his head out to see what was going on. The man was not injured.
The shooting victim, Cody Telega, 37, of Duluth was found in the common entry doorway of the building with “numerous apparent gunshot wounds.” He died from his injuries. Telega lived in Apt. #4 in the building.
The second suspect in the killing is Amber Michele Rose Walker, 41, of Minneapolis who is accused of aiding an offender.
Courts documents say Walker was with Hendon in a van that parked near the soon-to-be crime scene. She is also accused of waiting for Hendon’s return following the shooting.
The two suspects then drove out of Duluth and down southbound I-35 before Cloquet police spotted the van matching the get-away vehicle and made a traffic stop near the weigh station, according to the complaint. Walker, who was driver, and Hendon, who was the passenger, were then arrested.
Officers located a rubber glove in Walker’s sweatshirt pocket believed to be the glove Hendon was seen wearing during the shooting, according to court documents. Police also located a sling bag behind the front passenger seat that contained a handgun holster.
Surveillance camera footage from the porch confirmed Hendon was the suspect in the shooting, according to the complaint. City of Duluth security cameras also documented Hendon and Walker’s whereabouts before and after the shooting, according to the complaint.
Killing Happened After Home Invasion/Assault:
While a motive is not clear in the criminal complaint, authorities say the shooting happened after an earlier home invasion and assault inside Telega’s Apt. #4 while he was not there.
According to the criminal complaint, Duluth police responded to the building around 10:30 p.m. June 14 for a report of a man who was assaulted after “two unknown individuals kicked in the door.” The man, who was in Apt. #4 alone at the time, jumped out of a rear window and was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries.
The tenants of the apartment, Telega and an adult woman, arrived at the apartment some time later and discovered the damage. They called 911 and police responded to observe the door was kicked in and a rear window screen was removed, according to the complaint.
While the home invasion/assault victim was at the hospital, investigators say he called defendant Walker to ask her to pick him up from the hospital.
It would then be three hours later around 1:30 a.m. when Telega would be shot and killed by Hendon while Walker waited in the get-away van, according to court documents.
Charges:
Hendon is charged with second-degree murder and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He was not granted bail.
Walker is charged with “aiding an offender to avoid arrest-harbor/conceal.” Her bail was set at $100,000.
