Wednesday Morning Northland Forecast: 6/18/2025

A Sunny Wednesday

The Summer Solstice arrives on Friday, at 9:42 pm (Duluth time). That is when the sun takes its northernmost path in the sky, giving us the longest day of the year. This will be the beginning of “Astronomical Summer,” as opposed to “Meteorological Summer,” which started on June 1st. This coming weekend is also pretty famous for something else, and that’s Grandma’s Marathon, which is in it’s 49th year. Thousands of runners and their friends and families will be arriving in the Twin Ports over the next couple days, in anticipation of the races, music and other events taking place on Friday and Saturday. They are all hoping for great weather Friday and Saturday. Will Mother Nature comply?

Not necessarily. Today will be just fine. If we could get about 4 days in a row of today’s weather, everybody would be quite happy. That’s not gonna happen. We will have partly sunny skies, light NW winds, and a high of 80 today. Perfect. Then, things go sideways. Thursday will begin mostly sunny, then become mostly cloudy during the day, as a cold front drops down from the northwest. That will bring a 60% chance for showers tomorrow, with a windshift from the NW to the south, with a high of 77. On Friday, a warm front will start to move northward, from Iowa, bringing with it cloudy skies, a 50% chance for showers and thunderstorms, and a cooler high of 72. Ovenight Friday, showers are likely, and may produce between 1 and 2 inches of rain, into Saturday morning, with a low of 57. So, by the time the marathon begins Saturday morning, runners may have some pretty big puddles to run through, on their trek from Two Harbors to the finish line in Canal Park. Not exactly perfect conditions.

Later Saturday, things will clear out, and we will have partly sunny skies, strong east winds, 10-20 mph, and a high of 80. And Sunday? Lots of sunshine, winds from the south 15-25mph, and a high of 87. Uff da…now, that sounds like summer! Good luck, runners!
