Lake Effect Running Club Members Lace-up for Grandma’s Marathon
The main goal of Lake Effect is to help runners train for marathons together as a team.
DULUTH, Minn.- It takes many months of training to prepare for Grandma’s Half or Full Marathon.
Being a part of a team can help push runners to achieve their very best.
Right here in the Twin Ports, a running club brings that team aspect to athletes.
Lake Effect is a running club composed of collegiate athletes who want to compete on a team after graduation.
Lake Effect was founded in 2020 and is a part of the USATF member club that competes in the Minnesota Club Circuit.
The main goal of Lake Effect is to help runners train for marathons together as a team.
“Training for a marathon it differs from training for college races because you’re doing a lot more volume and if you are pounding that pavement, you know 90 to 100 miles a week alone to run an elite marathon time. The difference that just having a person with you can have is night and day,” said Lake Effect founder Tom Sederquist.
When training for a race like Grandma’s Marathon having teammates can help throughout the whole process.
“Having people right next to you is a huge advantage. Not just in training, when you are racing too. Having a teammate right next to you is huge. I had that situation last year. Me and Mark Loflen in our club were shoulder for the whole half marathon and I think we both ran PR’s. Just kind of a testament to the power of having teammates with you,” said Lake Effect member Evan Walpole.
A few members of Lake Effect will race in Grandma’s Half and Full on Saturday, June 21st.
