Blue Heron Research Vessel Invites Public On Board
DULUTH, Minn. — On Friday, members of the community got a chance to explore the Blue Heron research vessel.
Every summer the Large lakes Observatory hosts Science on Deck events.
The events invite the public to explore and learn about the vessel, as well as interact with scientists and crew members.
The Blue Heron assists scientists in various research activities, including deploying buoys, measuring lake current, and conducting fish stock assessments.
Researchers say its important for people to learn about Lake Superior’s current state and how it’s changed over time.
“I think people, they don’t need to just see us go out underneath the aerial lift bridge and wave to us, which is great, but they also it’s good to learn what we’re contributing to to the knowledge of the Great Lakes. So it’s fun to learn things,” Doug Ricketts, Marine Superintendent on the RV Blue Heron said.
The Blue Heron will be host to five more Science on Deck events this summer, rotating between the Pier B Dock and the Seawall behind the DECC.
