Hibbing Break-In Suspect Shot, Flees to Grand Rapids Hospital
HIBBING, Minn. – A man was shot in the stomach after he broke into a Hibbing Apartment and assaulted the two occupants, charges allege.
Hibbing Police responded to an apartment on the 500 block of East 40th Street around 5:30 a.m. last Friday, Jun. 29, for a report of shots fired, according to court documents. Officers spoke with the apartment’s owner, who said he shot a male who broke down his door and attacked him and another female occupant. The female said she was the suspect’s ex-girlfriend, and identified him as 40-year-old Michael Todd Hart.
The owner said that when Hart broke in, he began to hit both occupants with a ratchet wrench, according to a criminal complaint. When Hart began to strike the female, the owner went to retrieve his pistol from the bedroom and then fired once at Hart.
Charges allege that Hart fled the apartment and was driven by a friend the roughly 40 miles to Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids. Hart was assessed for a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but was then flown via Life Link to Essentia Hospital in Duluth.
A search warrant for Hart’s DNA was reportedly not executed because Hart “refused to comply with the warrant,” and told officers that “he was not Michael Hart.”
