Part of Munger State Trail washed out; Closed until winter

DULUTH, Minn. – A section of the Munger State Trail close to the Buffalo House restaurant is expected to be closed  until later this winter.

It’s closed to replace a failing culvert.

There is no designated detour available, so trail users should plan accordingly.

Recent heavy rainfall has caused severe soil erosion around the culvert located at a trout stream tributary to Mission Creek.

The culvert is part of the original railroad infrastructure that pre-dated the establishment of the trail and is more than 140 years old.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources had plans to replace the culvert, but the recent damage accelerated the timeline.

The area is between 0.8 miles northeast of Stenman Road in Carlton County and 2.5 miles southwest of the parking area at 11804 123rd Ave W Duluth, MN 55808 in St. Louis County.

The DNR wants trail users to not cross any barricades or closure signs.
