Lake Superior Day Brings Great Appreciation

DULUTH, Minn. – Lake Superior Day brought the community together for a day of fun, learning, and appreciation of the world’s largest freshwater lake.

People gathered at Barkers Island to celebrate Lake Superior through free Interactive learning activities, games, prizes, and paddle boarding. It was organized ‘Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve’ with support from other organizations like Friends of the Lake Superior Reserve, North Shore SUP, Wisconsin Sea Grant, and The Great Lakes Aquarium, all of which aim to teach people about this Great Lake.

“Coming to an event like Lake Superior Day can help you understand different ways people connect to the land and water around here. You might know what matters to you and your family, and your friends,” said Luciana Ranelli, education coordinator at LSNERR. “But then you get to come here and see what is interesting to other people, or what they’re researching or taking care of.”

Experts say 600 thousand people use the fresh water for drinking, home use, industrial use, and recreation, making it vital to understand and protect this shared resource.
