Man Dies After Boat Strikes Breakwall in Superior

UPDATE: The victim was identified as William Linster, 57, of Superior.

Investigation indicates that Linster was out boating with a friend on Saturday.  The friend was dropped of at the dock at about 11:30pm Saturday night, and Linster returned to the water.

The boat, a 21-ft Maxum, was found about a half mile out from the Superior Entry on Sunday morning July 27.

Evidence and debris was located along the Superior Entry wall that indicates a significant collision took place, and the current likely took the boat out to where it was eventually located, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The boat currently sits in 40 ft of water and plans are being finalized to bring it up later in the week.

The man was believed to be the sole occupant and operator of the vessel. The U.S Coast Guard responded and found the boat mostly submerged, with only the bow visible above water.

The man’s body was recovered from below the waterline with a line from the vessel wrapped around his leg.

During the recovery the vessel sank into Lake Superior.
