ASHLAND, Wis. — Firefighters in Ashland rescued people out on a windy Chequamegon Bay Thursday.

Fire officials said wind and a deflating raft got the 13-year-old girl and her grandmother stuck about 400 yards from shore.

The winds were so bad that the nearby Solstice Outdoors was not renting kayaks for the day.

Firefighters used a resident’s boat to rescue one of the victims.

The other person was rescued by kayakers from Solstice.

Nobody was injured, other than the victims swallowing a lot of water.

Ashland Fire Chief Stuart Matthias said the victims were not wearing life jackets and were found clinging to the folded deflated raft.
