MnDOT: Homeless Encampment Fire Caused $1.9M In Damage To I-35 In Duluth
DULUTH, Minn. — FOX 21 has learned of a nearly $2 million price tag to repair a section of I-35 in Duluth that officials say was caused by a homeless encampment fire.
The bridge work is just south of the Heritage Sports Center on I-35, according to MnDOT.
The encampment fire happened in September 2024.
An inspection found “enough damage that it needed to be repaired” for $1.9 million, according to a MnDOT spokesperson.
MNDOT Crews are replacing three of the bridge beams and the deck at this location.
Fencing will also be installed to avoid another costly problem.
From 2022 to 2024, MnDOT has spent nearly $1 million ($971,000) to install fencing at various location along I-35, between Fitger’s and Central Avenue to prevent encampments.
Below is a statement to FOX 21 about the repairs and how the transportation department balances community needs with safety:
“Keeping all Minnesotans safe is our top priority. MnDOT closely coordinates with state, city and county partners, and local service providers to provide information, support, and alternatives while responding to the complex and urgent needs of people experiencing homelessness. Highway right-of-way and roadways are not safe places for people to live, and we also need to protect our infrastructure assets. We try to be proactive, but it can be a challenge to constantly monitor every possible location.”
