Cloquet Football Adjusting to New Head Coach

Mike Klyve enters his first season as the Lumberjacks head coach.

CLOQUET, Minn.- The Cloquet football team has laced up their cleats for the start of the 2025 season.

This year, the Lumberjacks coaching staff has a slight change as the team has a new head coach at the helm.

Mike Klyve enters his first season as the Lumberjacks head coach.

Klyve takes over a squad that went 2-7 a season ago.

But Klyve is no stranger to Cloquet football as he served as an assistant coach for the past 5 seasons.

Being a part of Cloquet football the last few years has made the transition to head coach easier for Klyve.

“That was one huge advantage, we could hit the ground running. I know all these guys having been an assistant for five years. It’s been really good to get out here and get after it and not have to go through that get to know you phase just getting right after it,” said Klyve. ” We have a great staff and having the staff here from last year we only really replaced one guy. So that continuity has been really great for both the whole staff and our players.”

In the first few days of the Lumberjacks summer camp.

Coach Klyve brings high spirits to practice while working towards the team’s end goal.

“He brings a lot more energy, he had energy as an assistant, but now that he has the top roll, he definitely is impacting the team a lot more with the energy and the team’s attitude is just better I feel like as he has gotten the head coaching job,” said offensive linemen Ben Frerich.

In Klyve’s first season as head coach he still wants to keep the tradition of Cloquet football alive.

“The way some things look out on the field on Friday nights might look a little different but mostly we’re going to try and stick to Cloquet tradition of getting after people, running the ball hard, and playing hard, and being great tacklers, and being great football players,” said Klyve.

The Lumberjacks open up the season against Grand Rapids on Friday, August 29th.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
