CSS Football Marches into Camp with New Head Coach Matt Bremer

CSS opens up their season on September 6th against Wisconsin Lutheran College.

DULUTH, Minn.- The St. Scholastica football team marched into their summer camp earlier this week.

On Saturday, the Saints held their first day of padded practice.

This year, Scholastica will have a new head coach at the helm.

Matt Bremer will lead the Saints in the 2025 season.

Before his first year as head coach, Bremer has spent 11 years with the Saints over the course of two stints with the team.

CSS is coming off a 4-6 season in the MIAC conference.

As coach Bremer shifts into the lead role of the football program.

There are new challenges that he is ready to take on.

“It’s been a great transition, I mean it’s been a lifelong dream of mine to become a head coach. It’s something I’ve always aspired to be and aspire to do,” said Bremer. “It’s never as smooth as you want it to, just cause there’s things when you take this chair that you don’t know about. Even seeing it from a far you don’t know the questions that you’re going to get, all of a sudden, every single question comes to you and so that transition of needing to have every single answer is certainly a challenge but it’s one again that I dreamed about my whole life.”

As the Saints begin their 2025 season. The team has boiled down what they will have to accomplish in order to win more games.

“The three key things we look at are turnovers, so winning the turnover battle, their explosive plays, so that would be a pass of over 20 yards or a run over 20 yards, so our offense having more than our defense gives up, and then third and fourth downs. Having a higher percentage than the other team,” said Bremer.

The team also understands the importance of working together to achieve their goals.

“Building the trust with everybody and building that family aspect. You’re not just doing it for yourself, but you are doing it for the love that you have with the guys on your team,” said Saints linebacker Austin Mundt.  “That unlocks a deeper level of drive and deeper level of push you can do when you don’t want to let your family down.”
