Governor Tim Walz Participates in Nashwauk-Keewatin School Ribbon Cutting
Nashwauk, Minn. – The community of Nashwauk came together back in 2022, approving $42 million to go towards building a new school and $5.7 million to build the community wellness center.
“Many of you here today may recall with great, heartfelt memories our historic schools. 1000s of children received a top-notch education at those schools, and 1000s more will receive a first-class education here at this new school,” said Commissioner Ida Rukavina, IRRRB
The school and wellness center sit on 42 acres of land, and the two facilities make up 130,000 square feet. This space is built to serve the entire community and pairs well with families who plan to work at Mesabi Metallics, the new Taconite Mine in Nashwauk.
“To see a community who invests in their children, this is Minnesota’s newest school, and to be up here in Nashuak and see the commitment, it’s an optimism for the future,” said Gov. Tim Walz, Minnesota. “Coupling that with the opening of the first Taconite mine, the most modern, cleanest in the world, on the same day, it feels incredibly positive.”
Together, the new school, wellness center, and taconite mine mark a turning point for Nashwauk, bringing education, health, and jobs that Minnesota’s leaders believe will help the community thrive for generations to come.
“I think in a time where Iron Range experiences these things, kind of feels boom and bust, it’s kind of nice to see a path here that growth is happening,” said Gov. Walz.
At this time, parents can enroll their children through the online portal or at the school office.
