Gov. Walz Tours Mesabi Metallics Project
NASHWAUK, Minn. — Governer Tim Walz visited Mesabi Metallics for a tour of the construction progress.
The project will be the first mine and pellet plant in Minnesota in 50 years.
The focus is on creating ‘Green Steel’, using environmentally friendly mining practices and de-carbonizing steel making.
While on site, Governor Walz witnessed the completion of equipment installation of Mesabi’s first line inside the concentrator.
The concentrator will run three lines when fully commissioned, transforming iron ore into pellets for Steel production.
Governor Walz commemorated the installation saying, “I’m impressed by the progress at Mesabi Metallics—built by our union labor force—and I am encouraged by what this project means for our state’s economic future.”
Mesabi Metallics is on track to complete the project in early 2026 and begin commercial operation.
More information on the project and their vision can be found on Mesabi Metallic’s website.
